THE HISTORY OF THE ELEKTRA BASKETBALL CLUB
Basketball as it is known nowadays was first established in 1891 in the USA. The first introduction of basketball in Europe was already in 1898, however, the first official tournament was not earlier than in 1919. Basketball in Slovenia started to be played in 1912 but it didn't become a sport branch before the second world war.
In 1947 basketball was brought to Šoštanj from the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, by some students, who were studying there. They became enthusiastic and the first organized group began with its work in the club in 1948. In that way Šoštanj was one of the first Slovenian cities, where basketball began to be played.
The beginnings were more recreative, however, that recreation developed also in a competitory sport with regular trainings in different age selections.
The first official match was in 1949 against the team of town Celje. In the season 1949/50 the team Elektra began to compete in the regional league and already in the first year it won the first place. In 1959 the first team was placed in the first Slovenian basketball league. From that time on the basketball club Elektra has been one of the best in Slovenia. It has always taken care for the organized work in the field of the basketball in the Šalek Valley, especially with young people.
The first team and different teams of younger selections have always been among the best Slovenian teams.
Elektra basketball club is strongly connected with the local environment. It regularly collaborates with the organizations of the local self-government and with other similar organizations, especially with primary and secondary schools when they organize sport activities.
